Goines Family Reunion
"Divided By Distance, UNITED BY LOVE"
Our Goines Family Story
Anna Brown married Drew Goines and to their union, five children were born. The first was a son, whom they named Hazie. The second through the fifth were all girls named Verlillian, Earline, Mardee, and Ada.
The Goines lived on a farm in Canton Mississippi, a town located about 16 miles north of the capital city, Jackson. They loved their children immensely and raised them to love one another and fear the Lord. The Goines Family church home was Mount Zion Cobbville. Today, Mount Zion Cobbville is still holding church services and many of the Goines descendants are active members.
Drew Goines, affectionately called Bro. Drew, was of Native American descent. He shared his skill of maintaining horses and farming with his community. One of his favorite past times was riding around the countryside, along with his son Hazie, who was his image. He was a farmer, a hard worker, loved horses and a devoted family man.
Mrs. Anna Goines survived her husband and reared some of their grandchildren. She was affectionately known as Mama Anna by all, tall in stature and straight forward. She believed that land ownership should be a primary goal. It was very important that her children worked together and to support one another. Her youngest sister, Mamie, affectionately called Aunt Mamie by all in the Canton community, was the last survivor and shared her sister's strength and family values.
Drew and Anna Goines' children relished in their hearts what was taught to them by their parents; they raised their children, now the grandchildren together. Hazie, Verlillian, Earline, Mardee, and Ada lived not far from each in their individual homes. They would often share meals and the grandchildren would play together. The grandchildren were so close that many in the community didn't know who was a brother, a sister or a cousin.
